I'm currently reading the book The God Box by Alex Sanchez. The book is about a christian boy named Paul, who is very faithful to god. But after the new guy, Manuel (a christian, who is also gay) transfers to his school, he slowly discovers his homosexuality. Through the character, the author presents the controversy between religion and personal opinions, and how people are prejudice and unjust to homosexuals.
In the beginning of the book, the protagonist was unsure of his feelings. He had never had the same feelings for his girlfriend, as other couples had for each other. He loved her, just not in the same way. In a sense, Manuel was just the last straw in Paul's discovery of his feelings. When Manuel first admits he is gay and christian everyone's reaction is surprised. Some of the characters are completely open to Manuel's feelings and others reactions are much harsher. Because of Paul's extreme faith in the Bible, his immediate response is that Manuel should not be welcomed in his group of friends. However, when the he gets to know Manuel and begins to realize that by loving someone of his own gender isn't hurting anyone. Overtime Paul starts to figure out he is gay, and he starts questioning the Bible about whether or not it is okay to be homosexual. As the character is developing and discovering his hidden feelings, the author shows what effect religion has on his decisions.
I think that by having the character go through the struggles with his religion and personal beliefs can really help teens all around the world. This book can help teens who are in the same situations as Paul, overcome the challenges of being religious and homosexual. Also Paul and Manuel can be inspirations to all the conflicted teens in the world who are dealing with hardships in their lives. Overall this book sends a valuable lesson to teens about their sexuality, and it is also very relatable and helpful for teens in the same situations.
